YOUR CHANCE TO HELP SHAPE THE SECTOR'S COMPREHENSIVE SPENDING REVIEW BID {23 Jun 2010}
|
The Government have now announced their approach for running this year's spending review. All spending review processes are demanding and run to tight timetables, but this one is exceptional.
Previous Spending Reviews have seen submissions expected in late summer / early autumn and on this basis the Federation had planned for a joint submission to Government with the Chartered Institute of Housing and National Federation of ALMOs to be ready by the first week of September. We now understand that government departments will be making their first bids to the Treasury as early as the middle to end of July.
This obviously means that if the housing sector is going to seek to influence the Spending Review we need to ensure that the joint sector bid, which the Federation is leading, is ready to go by early July.
This will not be the end of negotiations around Spending Review numbers and the Federation expects to be involved in discussions with government departments and the Treasury right through until September.
The Federation's sector bid will be signed off by the Federation's board, but we extremely keen to engage as much as possible with members more widely. To facilitate this we are holding a series of Spending Review discussion seminars across the country. These are not limited to members from particular regions, rather they are designed to give members a good choice of date and location.
The seminars will be led by members of the Federations Investment and Finance Policy teams and will provide members with briefings about the current political, policy and financial context as well as plenty of time for questions and discussion.
To enable the Federation, to maximize its influence over the Spending Review process, the previously advertised member consultation events on a new rent setting regime will now take place later in the year.
The programme of seminars is as follows:

Midlands makes it mark with regions MP's
-
Buying an average home in the East Midlands requires an income of nearly £42,000
-
Housing Waiting lists rose faster in the West Midlands than any other UK region

Affordable housing delivery in both regions is only meeting half the regional target

Go Ahead for First Permanent Homeless Hostel in Mansfield {15 Oct 2009}
|
Mansfield could soon have its first permanent homeless hostel after councillors gave a project the go-ahead.
Framework Housing Association wants to build a major extension to Sherwood Street Day Centre to create 15 one-bedroom flats for single, homeless people.
At a
Mansfield District Council Planning Committee meeting on Monday, it was revealed the town had the highest number of rough sleepers in Nottinghamshire outside the city centre and there had been a long-term aim to provide a hostel.
Andrew Redfern, from Framework, told the meeting: "This is the outcome of many years of hard work by many people.
"This really is the missing piece in the jigsaw and it is very important we are able to implement it as proposed."
The scheme includes building new second and third floors at the day centre, with a ground floor extension for a meeting room, and Mr Redfern said the organisation had already gained funding from a number of sources.
And Rev Paul Hill, chairman of the Mansfield Inter-Agency Homelessness Forum, said he was involved with supporting the yearly winter shelter taking place at Nottingham Road Methodist Church.
"It is with great sadness that we have to turn people out on the streets after three months," he said. "This will offer the stability these people need."
One letter of objection was sent in from a local business raising concerns about problems with anti-social behaviour, but the police said they were happy with how the centre would be managed.
Under the proposals, the existing day centre will remain open to support homeless people and the 15 flats will each include one bedroom, a living room, a kitchen/dining area and shower room with toilet.
